Carpet repair and power stretching
Ripples across a carpet are not a defect in the carpet, they are a symptom of it having been installed with a knee kicker instead of a power stretcher. It is a repair, not a replacement.

Short answerRipples in carpet are an installation fault, not a defect, and are fixed by power stretching rather than replacement. Burns, bleach spots and pet damage are patched using donor carpet from a closet. Repair typically costs a fraction of re-carpeting the same room.
Power stretching
A power stretcher braces off the opposite wall and pulls the carpet properly tight before it is re-hooked on the tack strip. Furniture comes out of the room, the carpet gets detached along the affected walls, stretched, re-attached and trimmed. Ripples do not come back if it is done right.
Patching
Burns, bleach spots and pet damage can be cut out and replaced with a donor patch from a closet floor or a leftover remnant. A good patch is invisible from standing height once the nap is groomed. We are honest about when a patch will show — on a berber loop it usually does.
Seams and transitions
Open seams, peeling doorway transitions and delaminating carpet at the top of a stair nose are all repairable. On a Levitt-era stair with a shallow tread, re-wrapping the nose is often cheaper than re-carpeting the whole flight.

What carpet repair costs compared with replacement
Re-stretching a room is priced per room and is a fraction of what re-carpeting the same space costs, including the furniture handling. Patching is priced per patch and depends on whether donor material is available from a closet or a leftover roll. Seam repair and stair nose re-wraps are quoted individually. The reason repair is worth considering is simple arithmetic: a carpet with ripples or one burn mark is usually structurally sound everywhere else, and replacing an entire floor to solve a localized problem is spending several thousand dollars to fix something that costs a few hundred.
How to tell whether donor carpet exists
Look in the back of the master bedroom closet, in a coat closet, or under a bed that has never moved. Installers routinely leave a usable offcut in the linen closet or the attic of a new build. Failing that, carpet can be taken from inside a closet floor and the closet patched with something else entirely, since nobody looks at a closet floor. What does not work is buying new carpet to match — dye lots differ, and eight years of light and traffic mean even the identical product will not blend.
When we tell you to replace instead
Delamination, where the secondary backing separates from the primary, cannot be repaired and will keep spreading. Widespread abrasion, where the fiber tips have been physically cut by grit, does not respond to anything. Extensive dry rot in the backing from prolonged moisture is terminal. And a carpet already at the end of its life with three separate problems is not worth three separate repairs. We would rather tell you that and lose the job than take money for work that will not hold.

(516) 894-2880Questions we get
Will the ripples come back?
Not if it was power stretched. They come back when a cleaner re-kicks it instead of stretching it.
Do you have matching carpet?
We use donor material from your own closet or a leftover roll. We do not stock matching carpet — nobody does.
Can you repair a pet-chewed corner?
Usually yes, by patching. Chewed tack strip gets replaced at the same time.
How much does carpet re-stretching cost?
Priced per room and it is a small fraction of replacing the carpet in the same space, including moving the furniture.
Where does patch material come from?
A closet floor, an offcut left by the installer, or under an immovable piece of furniture. Buying new carpet to match does not work because dye lots and wear differ.
Is my rippled carpet defective?
Almost never. Ripples mean it was installed with a knee kicker rather than power stretched. It is an installation issue and it is repairable.
